Conference Background

Higher education systems across Asia have undergone remarkable expansion and transformation over recent decades, increasingly moving from the periphery toward greater visibility and influence in the global knowledge economy. As we approach the mid-21st century, these systems confront a complex convergence of emerging and persistent challenges. Geopolitical shifts, demographic transitions, the imperative of sustainable development, and rapid advances in digital technologies are reshaping the contexts in which universities operate.

In this changing global context, Asian higher education is no longer just “catching up”; it is exploring unique pathways and contributing distinct models to the global dialogue. The disruptive emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), alongside intensifying global competition and the need for regional cooperation, raises new questions about talent development, research, governance, and ethical responsibility.

Young Scholar & Doctoral Student Forum

This forum is co-hosted with the 15th THU SE Doctoral Student Forum and welcomes abstract submissions from doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students worldwide.

Forum scope: Submissions should represent research primarily conducted by students, with the first author and the presenting author (if accepted) being students. Submissions outside this scope may be submitted to the general conference tracks.

Conference Subthemes

We welcome theoretical contributions, empirical research, and policy analyses related to the overarching theme. While the conference has a primary focus on Asia, submissions that extend beyond the Asian context and offer comparative or broader global perspectives are also warmly welcome. Proposals should align with one of the following four subthemes:

1. Higher Education and Sustainable Development: Asian Pathways and Contributions

Universities are pivotal in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This stream explores how Asian universities are embedding sustainability into their curricula, research, and campus operations. We invite papers discussing specific Asian models of sustainable development, the role of universities in local and regional ecology, and how higher education can lead the transition towards a more sustainable future.

2. Policy Dialogues and Regional Cooperation: Building an Asian Higher Education Community

Moving beyond competition, how can we foster a robust Asian Higher Education Community? This stream focuses on cross-border collaborations, student and faculty mobility, recognition of qualifications, and transnational education policies. We seek contributions that analyze the mechanisms of regional integration and the challenges of policy harmonization in a diverse continent.

3. Doctoral Education and Innovation-Driven Talent Development: Evolving Asian Models

With the diversification of global knowledge production and the rise of Asia’s academic influence, doctoral education in the region stands at a critical juncture of reform. This stream interrogates the changing ecology of doctoral training, covering pivotal issues such as innovative capabilities, diverse career pathways, and mental well-being of doctoral researchers, as well as the reform of quality assurance and assessment frameworks. We are particularly interested in how Asian models of doctoral education are evolving to drive innovation and contribute to regional prosperity and global progress.

4. Digital Transformation and Tech Ethics: Future-Readiness of Asian Universities

The advent of Artificial Intelligence and big data presents both opportunities and ethical dilemmas. This stream examines the deep intervention of AI across all dimensions of higher education, exploring emerging concepts and practices that redefine the university experience. Topics may include AI in education, digital equity, data privacy, and the ethical responsibilities of universities in a tech-driven society.

5. Higher Education Transformation in a Changing World: Global Perspectives and Comparative Insights

Higher education systems in many parts of the world are experiencing profound transformation in response to social, economic, political, and technological change. This theme invites contributions that explore developments in higher education beyond Asia, highlighting perspectives and experiences from different regional contexts. We welcome studies that examine reforms in governance, funding, academic work, and institutional missions, as well as the evolving relationship between universities, the state, and society. Contributions may draw on region-specific cases or broader analytical reflections, offering insights that enrich international dialogue on higher education transformation in a changing world.

Types of Submissions

The conference welcomes different types of submissions to support diverse forms of scholarly exchange and participation. Authors are invited to choose the submission type that best fits the nature and scope of their work. Authors should carefully review the specific requirements for each submission type and ensure that their contributions align with the selected conference theme.

Abstract (Individual Presentation)

Abstract submissions propose individual oral presentations that address a clear research question, theme, or issue relevant to the conference. These submissions are suitable for ongoing research, conceptual discussions, or focused empirical studies.

Poster

Poster presentations provide an opportunity to present research in a visual and interactive format. Posters will be selected from accepted abstract submissions, and authors of eligible abstracts may be invited to present their work as posters.

Panel Proposal

Panel proposals bring together multiple presenters around a shared theme, research question, or debate. Panels are expected to offer coherent sessions that encourage dialogue and exchange among participants.

Review Criteria

  • Relevance to the conference theme and selected subtheme
  • Originality and contribution
  • Methodological rigor and clarity of argument
